Grenadier Guards Fifer

54mm Grenadier Guards Fifer - circa 1895

This chap was a gift from Padre Paul over at Funny Little Wars. He is a Grenadier Guards Fifer circa 1895. Ross Mac from Battle Game of the Month very kindly gave me some painting advice as it's not really my period. Of course, I was damning his eyes as soon as he mentioned a white jacket, but actually on a 54mm figure it's not so bad. It certainly beats painting a 120mm uniform entirely in white!

This fellow will soon be getting a coat of varnish and will be heading off to entertain the troops at the home of Mrs Kinch's great uncle.

I'm very happy with how he turned out and many thanks to Padre Paul for his very kind gift.

  2. Good job. I like that you have captured the difference between the warmer white of the wool jacket and the colder white of the blancoed leather belt.

    1. I used a tan undercoat for the jacket and used a cooler white undercoat for the belt. It took a little while, but I think it was worth it.

  3. He's very smart. His successors are too. The Band of the GGs came through Suffield last small and their foot drill and musicianship were both very fine.
Padre Paul is a fella I'd like to meet one day.

    1. I think a battle of the padre's would be an interesting spectacle.

  5. This figure has loads of charm. And painting white is so difficult, but you've done it quite nicely.

    I've not painted 54mm yet. Generally I'm into 25 to 32mm sculpts.
